car travel in Normandy

I%26#39;m planning a 3 day journey in Normandy leaving from Paris in April. Would you recommend I make hotel or B%26amp;B reservations prior to leaving the USA? Or can I wait until I rent the car in Rouen and then make plans as I drive through Caen, Bayeaux and Mont St. Michel. I am hoping to keep a low budget. Will I have difficulty finding a reasonable room during the week if I book as I go?

I am not sure how busy April will be. I am travelling in July and some B and B are booked when we want to go. We have preplanned all our accommodations in France for next summer already.

I%26#39;d say that you can wait until you arrive in Normandie EXCEPT in the Mont Saint Michel because there is a lot of visitors any time of the year, and just a very few hotels in it (you can find some more on the coast, but isn%26#39;t it a pity to sleep elsewhere ??)

I%26#39;d suggest you take your accomodation with the official Normandie tourisme website : http://www.normandy-tourism.org/

Book ahead. If you are flexible, I recommend La Ducrie (see recommendations on this site) It is a good central location to the places you want to go.

Here are som eother options to help you find and book inexpensive lodgings.

Do a web search for %26quot;Logis de France%26quot;. They maintain a list of small local hotels and you can book on-line.

Also search for %26quot;Chateaux et Hotels de France%26quot;.

And finally, Best Western seems to have found a niche in providing rooms for the French traveler.

If youare picking up a car in Rouen, it may take you 4 or 5 hours to get to Bayeaux. However, the scenery along the way is beautiful.

Thanks for the information regarding the distance between Rouen and Bayeux. I%26#39;ve recently decided to rent a car in Caen. Does anyone know if more than one Avis rental agency exist in Caen? I saw somewhere (can%26#39;t remember where) to that effect.

From Caen I plan to travel to Mont St. Michel. Besides the Mont is there anything else worth extra time? I thought about either St. Malo or Avranches.

My husband and I will be in Bayeaux in Mar. We would like to visit Mont St Michel too but I understand that it is quite a long drive. Any suggestions on the best way to reach Mont St Michel. We will stay at the BW Hotel in %26quot;Pontorson?%26quot;

I have since done a little more research and found Bayeux is a 2 hr ride from Mont St.Michel by car.
