Try the hotel Alane, http://www.hotelalaneparis.com/ it is a nice 3 stars , located near Gare de l%26#39;Est, rooms have good size. Its is located near a Metro station. It was newly renovated, it is clean and nice.People there are really nice.

I hope it will be helpfull.

For a nice atmosphere, imho, the 6th (Saint germain - Quartier Latin) is the better choice, with a lot of hotels at all prices and Cafes and boutiques... I love Place Republique but too crowded for a short stay...

I would choose Istria - it has been recently renovated and is across the street from a Metro stop. The Montparnasse area is quite appealing and has excellent transportation connections. The best price I%26#39;ve found for Istria is through www.cybevasion.com and also www.123europe.com, unless the hotel itself is running a special?

It is also listed on www.parisby.com (lots of photos!) and www.hotelclub.net

I read in the reviews to avoid room #6 because it is just off the reception area and thus noisy.

There are plenty of cafes and shops in the area, in fact two fairly well-known restaurants are on the same street as the Istria:

La Mere Agitee

Natacha

I would stay in the St. Germain area---lots of inexpensive, nice hotels, walking distance to most everything you want to see, fun to just walk around day or night, tons of shops and restaurants right there. As I recall, Montparnasse was uphill and quite a bit away from everything. I prefer to walk to all my touring/eating/shopping. We stayed at the Hotel St. Thomas de Aquine that was away from the noise of St. Germain and just across the river from the Louvre and down the street from the D%26#39;Orsay. It was a nice, clean typical Parisian hotel, nothing fancy, but good showers and bathrooms and helpful staff re: restaurant recommendations and the price was great--110E/night. They have a web site--check it out. Enjoy!

The area around the trains stations in the tenth is not so nice and you may feel intimidated walking alone there at night, so I would opt for the Montparnasse address.
