What is Saint Germain Des Pres?

Is this a special district? Things to see and do?

The 6eme arrondissement, commonly know as Saint Germain des Pres (after a martyred Bishop of Paris) is on the Left Bank of the Seine and takes its name from the church (and long gone monestary), Eglise Saint Germain des Pres, which was had temporal power over the district until 1640.

If you%26#39;re not familiar with the 6th-Saint Germain des Pres district of Paris, you really need to get out your Paris guidebooks and do some MORE personal research.

Spring, while I certainly only saw the tip of the iceberg my first trip to Paris, I have to tell you Saint Germain des Pres was my very favorite area. We loved the St. Supice church so much and shopping anywhere there is wonderful. Be sure you read about it as KDK says and fit it into your itinerary.
