I am a woman travelling alone to Paris for the first time this April for two weeks. Because of the length of my stay, I need something rather inexpensive. Have narrowed choices down to: Familia Hotel in the 5th or Hotel du Champ de Mars in the 7th. Have read all the ratings, but am still undecided. Will the Familia be too noisy? Does the Champ de Mars really smell when someone flushes?! Of course safety is a prime concern. And the size of the room is not - as long as it%26#39;s clean. Any help would be appreciated.

The areas you are talking about are huge. I think it%26#39;s too difficult to answer without knowing where in each area these hotels are to be found.
PersonallyI think that the 7th is dead and mostly for administrative buildings.

i vote for latin quarter and familia hotel or if you want a less noisy hotel there are plenty of hotels in that price range that are clean and nice and maybe they are less noisy

It will depend upon your own personal preferences and priorities. If quiet is high on your list, then the neighborhoods of the 7th will suit you best. As has been mentioned, most of the neighborhoods of the 7th are largely residential/institutional/commercial and not very much happens there in the evenings. The most active spot in the neighborhood will be the Ecole Militaire Metro station with people returning from or leaving for %26#39;...somewhere else..%26#39; in Paris. But, there are convenient Metro and public bus connections and you can stroll to the Eiffel Tower.
The Familia%26#39;s neighborhood is lively and active....but if you want quiet in the evening, you can ask for a room on the back of the hotel, away from the rue des Ecoles. The advantage of the Familia is location. You will be within easy walking/strolling distances of a great many attractions and the neighborhoods of the 5th, 6th, 4th %26amp; 1st arrondissements are %26#39;flow%26#39; together almost seamlessly.
We%26#39;ve stayed at the Familia and enjoyed of experience of the hotel. The only reason why we%26#39;ve never returned is because we tend to be high season/summer visitors and want a hotel with A/C. The Familia doesn%26#39;t have A/C, which wouldn%26#39;t be a problem for you in April. We%26#39;ve recommended the Familia to friends and acquauntances over the years and all have liked it, several returning for repeat visits (voting with their wallets).

We have put some budget travelers up at the Hotel de Nevers on the rue du Bac (not to be confused with the one in the 11th) and they were quite happy, even the ones who were compromising their usual luxury travel style to meet the budgetary needs of their traveling companions.
It is on a quiet residential street and we%26#39;ve never had any complaints about the smell.
It is in the 7th, but on the border with the 6th and definitely has the rive gauche feel!

Thank you all for your taking the time to post your opinions. I just booked the Familia Hotel on rue des Ecoles. Now all that remains is to buy a pair of those Mephistos someone mentioned on another post...

Can I suggest the Hotel Cujas-Pantheon on the rue Cujas near the Sorbonne. They have single rooms on every floor. Rue Cujas is just off Bvd St. Michel near the Place Sorbonne but up a little from the bustle of Place St.Michel. It is opposite the Luxembourg Gardens. You could also try the Hotel de Trois College next to the Cujas-Pantheon and a little more expensive. I am not sure about single rooms there. My wife and I have stayed several times in both hotels, recently in the Les Trois College. They are typical small Parisian hotels but clean and friendly and with some style, both family run. We have walked in the area by day and night without any fear. If you put both names in a search engine you should get some info.
Regards, have a good holiday
Les Irlandais!
