Eating out on a budget

Hi everyone,

I won%26#39;t have a great deal of money when I go to Paris.

Is it possible to find really good value places to eat %26#39;other that Mac Donalds%26#39; LOL

Also in general are the bakery%26#39;s really expensive.

Thanks

Bread is cheap here.... it%26#39;s the law. You could survive quite well by frequenting bakeries and getting the rest of your provisions at the local markets/grocery stores. I spent an entire year eating Petit Ecoliers for breakfast with baguettes. apples and Caprices des Dieux cheese when I was a starving student here.

Also a sandwich at the cafe bar is under three euros, and the coffee is cheap at the bar, too.

Other affordable fast/cheap food options would include crepes, falafel, and schwarma.

Could you give us an idea of how much money you could spend per day on the 3 usual meals?

|||

Little emabarassing. LOL

I will be ther for 3 days. So approx 50 spending money each day, That is for food and some tourist attractions. etc.

Of course they won%26#39;t be the greatest restaurants that you%26#39;ve ever been to but there is really no problem in finding places that offer 3-course lunch and dinner set menus, where you have maybe a choice of 5 dishs for each course, for about 15 euro.

You could easily spend 5 euro on breakfast (if it%26#39;s not included in the hotel bill), and then spend 10 on lunch (not just a sandwich but a pretty good meal)

That leave you with 35 euro. If I take 25euro for a main meal including wine then you have 10 euro per day for transport and entry into 1 place (there are hundreds of things to see in Paris that cost nothing!).

My 3 best cheap fastfood options are :

Kebabs ! The meat isnt a stack of pressed, processed meat like in the UK, but consists of real meat carved (lamb and turkey I think). This is put into a pita bread with your choice of lettuce, tomatoes, onions and a sauce (white/red/spicy/American) and covered with chips for the neat price of about 450.

You can pick one of these beasts in all of the built up areas of town and they are normally run by Turks/Greeks. If you ask for a sandwich grec frites the guy will ask you what sauce and if you want salad (lettuce)/tomato/onion/ with it. Just point at the stuff and youll be fine.

These places normally are family run and thus stay open until about 4/5am.

Crpes : Another late-nite favorite but chip-lovers beware as you wont get any with it (unless you buy them separately). So a crepe is basically a pancake but the flour is slightly darker and unlike in the UK on that special Tuesday, the fillings are savory. The normal fillings to be found at a crepe stall are egg/mushrooms/bacon/chicken/ cheese/ham/spicy sausage and probably many, many more.

These things take 3 minutes to make and cost about 4 for 4 fillings and tend to be HUGE and worth a chance for those that thought the only thing you ate with pancakes was jam!

Not what most are used to but there are many, many Chinese fast-food places in Paris. The deal is that you walk into the store and look at the display of pre-cooked meals in front of you. Choose what you want and the guy pops the lot in the microwave for you to either eat in (sur place) or take away (emporter).

99% of these places have a fixed menu where you get for example 3 nems (small fired spring rolls), rice and a chicken/beef dish for about 650. Its true that the quality isnt as good as a normal restaurant and that the dishes offered are the same everyplace you go but its a good, quick, cheap feed.

Dont ask for chips as you wont get any and make sure you get chopsticks/forks if you do take-away.

I *hate* the way this site formats my posts !

|||

are there enough filling selections available for crepes for them to be a good option for vegetarians?

|||

Take-away crepes will always offer you :

Mushroom

Cheese

Egg

I%26#39;ve seen a few places with mixed diced peppers

Sit down / eat in places will usually have much more of a choice.

One egg/cheese crepe can take me from my noon lunch to an 8pm dinner, which is pretty filling giving my appetit.

Had a great low cost lunch today at Cuisine de Bar on the rue Cherche Midi, next to the Poilane bakery.

I got a glass of wine, a salad, a tartine sandwich and a coffee for my 11E.
